I am a multidisciplinary artist, working primarily in fabric and paper collage. My art is about identity, both inherited or familial, as well as “found” identities. I attempt to connect with other people and cultures through the art I create.
The artist Luchita Hurtado states, “Everything in this world, I find I’m related to.” As a folklore major at the University of California – Berkeley, I studied the art, crafts, traditions, stories and beliefs of the people of many cultures. This continues to be a passion, and is integral to my outlook on the world, resulting in the art I create, the travels I take and the way I interact with the world.
My textile collages draw on traditions of quilting & fabric arts, traditions which are part of virtually every culture. The vernacular of textiles references community and culture:
My paper collages investigate the many identities we embrace; specifically those of women.
My Blue Women Series is a series of more than 150 collages of women, depicted in various activities and poses: some of joy, some of sadness, some of contemplation.
The magpie is my logo, as I identify with the pesky and inquisitive bird who is attracted to shiny - and rusty – objects. Like the magpie, I find rusty metal pieces, scraps of paper and other ephemera, and then piece together the stories and cultures into my art.

- We are part of a “tight knit” family or community
- We are “woven, or stitched, together”
- We are at “loose ends,” we are “unraveling,” we are “fraying or frayed”
- We are “bursting at the seams”
- We are part of the “fabric” of our families and our communities

Isn't this the coolest photo? My friend, Merrilee, took this photo of our reflection in the pond at Oxbow.
It was an amazingly dramatic day, visually.
